IDM contacted us because they wished to profile two Edmonton-based Irish dance sisters in an upcoming issue. Both sisters had both been making great leaps in their abilities, with several podium finishes at recent national and international competitions, and were starting to get noticed. IDM wanted a cover photo, editorial photos and an interview with the sisters.
We knew that the cover image had to be eye catching and pleasing to look at, and this informed our shooting decisions. The sisters wore a pleasantly toned, denim ensemble with colour coordinated accessories. Shooting in a natural setting felt the most appropriate, based on prior cover images IDM had published, so we went to an urban park for the light and airy feel. Fortunately for us, it was also raining and cloudy that day, so in between downpours, we got wonderful, natural soft light, with rich saturated colours from all the greenery due to the extra rain.
In keeping with the outdoors theme, we decided to shoot the interview with the sisters outside too. The naturalistic feel enhanced the authentic tone of their words and responses. It wasn’t a totally glossy studio look, it felt real, genuine and down to earth, because it was. Lastly, for a little extra to truly go the distance, we recorded an original soundtrack for the interview. The music was performed by professional Irish musicians playing traditional Irish folk music.
